Saskatchewan Party Government Turns Dickensian

The Louis Riel Trail

If you had the idea that the Saskatchewan Party are anything other than radical conservatives, I'd invite you examine the news story which details the facts around a government funding plan that will result in a program that serves lunch to 1300 inner-city kids being put on hold for a couple of weeks.

More to ADHR and Normative discourse. . . . .

KirbyCairo: From Politics to Poetry

With all due respect ADHR, I really don't think you understand what I have been saying. If I sounded arrogant, I appoligize, but this conversation brings up some serious emotions and I have been having this paradigmatic argument for so many years.

SUCCESS EQUALS FAILURE

My Blahg

Shorter Stephen Harper: We need to give the police more powers to do the job they’ve already done without them.

Lapsed anti-terror provisions — extraordinary measures the Conservative government has been trying to revive — might have been useful in the current effort to round up suspects in an alleged bomb plot, the prime minister hinted Wednesday.

Stephen Harper failing Northern Canadians: Layton

NDP - Press Releases

YELLOWKNIFE—New Democrat Leader Jack Layton today accused Stephen Harper of failing the needs of Northern Canadians.

“Whether it’s standing by as our pristine North is polluted, promoting an ill-conceived Northern Strategy or ignoring the calls for a highway along the Mackenzie Valley, Stephen Harper has made it clear that he is not concerned with the problems facing the people of the North,” Layton said.

A Back-To-School Wishlist for Society

Politics, Re-Spun

Simply, two things. Let’s make sure our public school system recognizes two things:

  1. Our children are priceless individuals with immense capacity to excel, not standardized, interchangeable commodities who can be warehoused in assembly line learning factories.
  2. Thinking matters, not just filling up heads with data.

A week before the new school year starts is a key time to think about some priorities.

Some Problems of Democracy. . . . .

KirbyCairo: From Politics to Poetry

I was having an online conversation with one of the people who commented on my blog and it got me thinking about the challenges facing our democracy in a way I hadn't before. Because of the gun-registry issue this person was struggling with the issue of representation and the manner of responsibility that a representative has to his or her constituents. Like many people this person had the gut reaction that an elected person should 'represent' the will of those how elected him/her, thus voting the way they want them to on issues such as the gun-registry.

Capitalism vs State Capitalism and Potash

The Government of Saskatchewan wants nothing to do with a state (read China) corporation takeover of Potash Corp.  The Globe reports:

Thursday Morning Links

Accidental Deliberations

An assortment of articles for your perusal...

- Just you wait, the Cons' census vandalism will be forgotten any day now:
Released Thursday morning, the EKOS survey delivers nothing but bad news for the Tories, showing their support reduced to a narrow base of hardcore older Western males. This, as they bleed support from women, young people and university educated Canadians.

Beyond the echo chamber

Accidental Deliberations

It remains to be seen how the rest of New Brunswick's election campaign will play out - and particularly whether either the Libs or the Cons will try (however implausibly) to adopt a theme of responsible management for themselves. But for now, it's hard to imagine the NDP's chosen message fitting more perfectly into the broader campaign.

On confirmation

Accidental Deliberations

Not that it's particularly surprising that the B.C. Libs were less than honest in claiming to have never thought about imposing the HST until roughly three seconds before they officially declared it a done deal.

Copyright Reform Luddite Style!

The Future Is Unwritten

What can we the consumer’s expect from the Bill C-32 the government’s proposed copyright reform? Sadly, though the bill may be a slight improvement on Harper’s last ill-conceived attempt at a new legal frame work for the digital age, it remains hopelessly out of touch with the two stakeholders who arguably should have the most say in this process: artists and the public. While Harper paid lip
